Plan Now So Your Metal Building is Ready for Spring

Now that the holiday season is behind us, our thoughts are turning to longer days and warmer weather. You may also be thinking about special projects you want to start on and have ready by spring. Maybe you have set your sights on a new metal building to add to your property. Now is the time to start planning if you want to have the building ready for spring. There are certain steps you will need to take to be sure you have everything in place, and each step has a lead time.

Metal Building ready for the Spring

The Perfect Time to Build Your Metal Building

The best time to build your metal building is when the weather is mild. Summer’s peak heat often brings tighter installation schedules. Harsh winters make handling equipment difficult and cause delays due to the weather. Spring offers a mild climate, allowing precision and efficiency, and reducing weather-related delays. Site preparation goes smoothly in the warmer weather of spring because the soil is less compact and easier to work with.

Start Planning Now

Start planning now, in the winter, for permits, site preparation, and ordering materials to get ahead of spring demand. Site preparation includes clearing, grading, drainage, and preparing an appropriate foundation or base for your building. Ordering materials and preparation can all cause delays.

Regardless of whether your metal structure is going to be a building for ministry, a workshop for your personal use, a commercial building, a recreational vehicle storage unit, a garage, or a carport, you will need to go through the same phases in planning for it and the construction of it.

Three Phases of Planning and Construction

Let’s look at the three phases of planning and building your metal structure, regardless of the purpose of the building.

Phase 1: Winter Planning (Now to Early Spring)

  • Research and Design: Determine the building size, function, and consult local zoning for codes (wind/snow loads). Finalize engineered drawings with Trinity Steel Structure, including doors, windows, and insulation needs.
  • Budget and Contractor: Get quotes, either get a General Contractor to manage the process or plan for a self-build.
  • Permits: Start the application process early because there is an influx of requests in the spring.
  • Site Preparation: Arrange for site clearing, grading, and any required soil testing. Ensure proper drainage and prepare the site for your chosen foundation or base. All required anchors are included with the building and installation.
  • Material Orders: Finalize your building design and place your order early to secure production scheduling and preferred installation timelines.

Phase 2: Early Spring – Site Readiness & Installation

  • Site Preparation: Customer to complete grading and drainage, and prepare the site for the appropriate foundation or base for your building.
  • Building Installation (Included): The steel structure, including framing, roof and wall panels, doors, trim, sealing, and any selected upgrades such as insulation or ventilation, is installed in one coordinated installation by the manufacturer’s crew, following all specifications and standards.
  • Weather Buffer: Be ready for unpredictable spring rain or cold snaps and factor flexibility into your schedule.

Phase 3: After Installation – Final Customer Steps

  • Final Inspections & Permits: If required by your local jurisdiction, the customer is responsible for arranging final inspections and obtaining any necessary occupancy permits.

Trinity Steel Structures Offers Many Choices

By starting your plan now, you have time to look at the variety of sizes and types of metal buildings Trinity Steel Structures offers. Deciding the purpose of your building is the first decision you have to make, and it may be the easiest.

You know why you want and need a building–storage, workshop, etc. But, beyond this, you have many other ways you can go. Here are some steps to ensure you get the perfect building for your needs and space.

Step 1: Define Your Building’s Purpose and Needs

  • What is the primary function of the building? Is it a garage, workshop, storage, office, retail, barn, or facility for other purposes?
  • Will you need doors?
  • Will you need roll-up doors and bays?
  • Do you need windows?

Step 2: Space Required

  • What is the space requirement?
  • How much square footage, height, and clear span (no interior columns) do you need?

Trinity Steel Structures offers options for any function and purpose, including:

Step 3: Consider Features and Budget

  • What custom features do you need or want: insulation, ventilation, windows, doors (roll-up, walk-in), and interior layouts?
  • What is your budget? Realize that the size, materials, and complexity drive the costs.
